return to key {link to the Hymenoptera Name Server} Type location Fernando Po (Cremastogaster impressiceps, Mayr, 1902: 294, worker; see Bolton, 1995, who has type location as Equatorial Guinea) collector R. Buchholz; subspecies frontalis (Santschi in Wheeler, 1922: 154, worker, see below) from Zaïre, longiscapa (Stitz, 1916: 384, worker) from Zaïre, at Duma, by Schubotz; and lujana (Forel, 1915c: 340, worker) from Zaïre, collected at Kondué, by Luja; worker and queen described .

Mayr's (1902) description is at {original description}. Stitz's (1916) description of longiscapa is at {original description}.

Mayr (1902) gave the colour as dark brown, the scape and legs brown , the mandibles red-yellow, ends of funiculus and tarsi brownish-yellow.

Forel (1915c) described lujana as -
WORKER - TL 3.6-4 mm; larger than type. Subopaque; sculpture stronger, with longitudinal striae more distinct and specially with stronger more abundant puncturation. Longitudinal impression on vertex also longer, extending into postclypeal notch. Head more strongly scalloped and wider posteriorly. Thorax as in type; postpetiole notch slightly more feeble and petiole wider slightly less narrowed posteriorly. From Kasai, Kondué, Zaïre, by Luja.

{Crematogaster impressiceps frontalis} Wheeler (1922) also listed it from Cameroun (at Abo, by R. Buchholz) and Congo locations. he gave the following information -
Panga and Faradje, S (Lang and Chapin). The specimens from Panga were found inhabiting the hollow twigs of Barteria fistulosa (Bequaert, 1922, p 438-9), those from Faradje were associated with aphids.
Crematogaster impressiceps variety frontalis Santschi, new variety.
WORKER - Length 3 to 3.5 mm. Pale brown; thorax less sculptured than in the typica impressiceps. Frontal groove deeply impressed. Stature less variable and smaller than in the typical form of the species and larger than in the variety longiscapa Stitz, but the scape also extends beyond the occiput as in that variety." (Santschi). Numerous specimens from Malela (type locality) and Kunga (Lang, Chapin, and J. Bequaert); those at Kunga found nesting in the hollow internodes of the myrmecophyte Cuviera, species (Bequaert, 1922, p 492); the specimens from Malela "living in a small carton nest, about 9 cm. long, fixed upon a stalk of Raphia."

{Crematogaster impressiceps major}The photomontage is of specimens collected in Cameroun - south-western tropical coastal forest area between Edéa and Campo (McKey Wolbachia project) - Cameroon 59 from location EBO, 10 April 2001, nest in a tree. These are dimorphic. The head and body with dense fine longitudinal striations; the gaster is coriaceous and dull. The mandibles are coarsely striated, with puncturation close to the apical margin. Clypeus with fairly coarse striations. Head in full face view square but impressed behind and with a distinct medial smooth line. Eye flat and ovoid with a narrower lower apex. Antennal funiculus distinct - segments 2-7 resembling slightly elongate beads, distinct club with apical segment largest. Colour all over dark reddish-brown; antennal club pale yellow to near white. Dense decumbent pilosity all over, some fine erect hairs on anterior of head, pronotal angles and propodeum. In profile alitrunk domed, highest on mesonotum which has a distinct median carina, but in the form of a central line and not pronounced or protruding as in Atopogyne. Propodeal spines fairly short, acute and downturned at tips.
