Dorylus (Alaopone) atratus F. Smith

return to key {link to the Hymenoptera Name Server} Type locality Nigeria (F. Smith, 1859b: 4, illustrated, male; in Anomma by Menozzi, 1942: 165, presumably following Emery, 1895j: 723) from Old Calabar; male only known (see Bolton (1995) .

Smith's (1859b) very brief description is at {original description}. Emery's (1895j) longer description and illustration is at {original description}.

The overall size, TL ca 19 mm, and mandible shape would appear to place this in subgenus Alaopone.

Also from Cameroun (at Bibundi, by Tessman), the Congo (at Ogowe, by Mocquerys) and, Fernando Po (by Conradt; Santa Isabel by Schultze); plus a single male found in Zaïre (at Stanleyville, by Lang & Chapin); (Wheeler, 1922).
