Technomyrmex (Technomyrmex) moerens Santschi

return to key {link to the Hymenoptera Name Server} Type location Congo (Santschi, 1913c: 312, illustrated - gizzard, worker) collected at Mbomou, by Weiss in 1909; junior synonyms congolensis (Technomyrmex albipes subsp. congolensis, Karavaiev, 1926: 443, status unclear), nigricans (Technomyrmex moerens var. nigricans, Santschi, 1930a: 69, worker, illustrated) from Zaïre; incisus (Technomyrmx incisus, Weber, 1943: 380, illustrated, worker & intercaste; replacement name nequitus, Bolton, 1995: 402; synonymy by Bolton, 2007: 28) from Sudan; longiscapus (Technomyrmex longiscapus, Weber, 1943: 381, illustrated, worker; synonymy by Bolton, 2007: 28) from Sudan; worker only described (see Bolton, 1995) .

Santschi's (1913c) description is at {original description}. In a brief note (Santschi, 1930a) he added that the thorax is more elongated and its excision forms a more open re-entrant angle than in T. foreli. Under nigricans he noted - TL 2.3-2.6; black, mandibles, antennae and femora dark brown, tarsi medium brown. Differing from the type by a slightly deeper notch in the clypeus and the funiculus segments a little shorter. Specimens from Zaïre, Kunugu, 1 worker; Ganda Sundi, 1 worker; Luebo, Kalembi, 1 worker, more pubescent (Dr H Schouteden); Benza Mazola, 1 worker (R. Mayné) {original description}.

Also from Guinea (at Mt. Kakoulima, by Silvestri; in Wheeler, 1922).

{T. moerens}Bolton's (2007: 28) revised illustrated description is at {original description}.

{Technomyrmex species T3} Nigeria specimens (as Technomyrmex species T³, Taylor, 1978: 55). WORKER. TL 2.49 mm, HL 0.61, HW 0.54, SL 0.59, PW 0.39
Colour red-brown to black, the coxae of mid- and hind-legs and apex of fore coxa are white. Appearance dull due to moderately fine pubescence, coarser on the gaster. Erect hairs sparse, on the alitrunk there is a single pair on the pronotum and mesonotum. Propodeum obtusely rectangular, with the vertical face slightly convex in profile.
I collected it from cocoa at the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria, Idi Ayunre. Nest seen in a termite damaged branch and the ants also using old termite tunnels on the tree.

As Technomyrmex species T³ in Taylor (1981) but listed without reference by Bolton (2007).

{Technomyrmex moerens}The photomontage is of a specimen from Congo, Brazzaville, ORSTOM campus, collected by Yves Braet & Eric Nzassi, 2007. Note that this is somewhat smaller, TL ca 1.8 mm, than the dimensions given by Bolton & Santschi (TL 2.4-3.1 mm) but in all other ways it matches, at least the brief note by Santschi (1930a) on nigricans. Other images can be seen in the folder at - Congo - {original description}

{Technomyrmex moerens}The photomontage is a monochrome version of the above minor specimen from Congo.
